First look at the strips where you can see a part of a proverb, you should find another part of the proverb. If you have found, read them aloud. Let’s divide into two groups according to the colour of the strips you have.  Blues are the 1st group, reds are the 2nd group.

II. Presentation.

a. What is love? How do you understand the meaning of this word?

Suggested answers:

1. Love is a deep feeling which can be felt not only by people. We can see love between animals, too, when animals take care of their little ones.

2. Love is the most beautiful and deepest feeling that people can have.

3. Love is the best feeling in the world. Love makes the world go round. It is the greatest mystery of all times.

4. If you ask someone “What is love?”, he or she will hardly find enough words to express its meaning. When you love someone or something, your heart and soul become warmer and kinder. People, who carry love in their hearts, are always happy and in good mood.

5. Love helps to live and survive in the hardest moments of our lives. Almost all feelings in the world have some advantages or disadvantages. However, love has only advantages. It brings harmony and peace.

6. I think that love is the most important thing in everyone’s life. That’s why poets make verses, directors shoot films and composers write songs about it. All people in the world want to love and to be loved. When love is mutual, it is the best thing that can ever happen to a man.

b. Yes, love is a deep feeling. It can be different. Look at the pictures. How would you describe the types of love portrayed?

Suggested answer:

There is first love, married love or love for husband or wife, a romantic love, love of self – especially among young girls, hero worship or love for celebrities, parental love or parents’ love for children, religious love, love for sport or sport clothes or things, love for animals, sibling love or love between sisters and brothers, love for friends, teenage love, love for a boyfriend or a girlfriend, love in old age, love for books or reading and so on.

c. Choose one of the  proverbs and quotations you have matched and explain the meaning of it.    ( #1 group - quotations         #2 group – proverbs)

Group 1:

ž  “There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved.” – George Sand

ž    Love conquers all things. – Virgil

ž  “Life without love is like a tree without blossoms or fruit.” – Kahlil Gibran

“There is only one  happiness in life, to love and be loved.” – George Sand .

Suggested answer:

Love is  happiness; only love gives meaning to life. Happiness is to be happy in love, unhappiness means  to have no love at all. Big romantic loves aren’t only a creation of our minds and dreams. They are also a creation of our societies. We know love between Romeo and  Juliette , Ruslan and Ludmila, Enlik and Kebek. In the history of any culture the problems, concerning human relationships, such as love or friendship, played and still play an important role.

People try to find out the answers to the questions - what is the meaning of love, why do we need to love someone and why is it so boring without love. However, these eternal questions have no definite answer and cause a lot of debates. We can say that love plays a very important role in the life of  people. We can make a conclusion that the concept “love” can be expressed with the help of other nouns or adjectives such as: devotion, passion, kindness, happiness, marriage and love of a mother. Pronouncing these words, people associate all of them with love.

2 group:

1. “Happy is the marriage where the husband is the head, and the wife is the neck.”  (Kazakh proverb)

2. “In a good family the husband is deaf and  the wife is blind” (French Proverb)

3. ”Men and women sleep on the same pillow, but they have different dreams.” (Mongolian Proverb)

Suggested answer:

“Happy is the marriage where the husband is the head, and the wife is the neck.”  (Kazakh proverb)

Husbands usually make major decisions and they have unquestionable power outside the home, but when it comes to their children and their home, it is women who have the power. That’s why they say that while the man is the head of the household, the wife is the neck and she pays much attention to the inner sides, inner problems of the family. There are some reasons for this mentality.

Kazakh wives are known for their loyalty, dedication to their families and great parenting skills.

If a husband is supposed to provide for the family, the wife is expected to take care of the house, the children and even the husband  as if he was a kid. Actually the “wisdom” of treating men like children is passed from the older generation of women to the younger as the most sure formula for a happy marriage.

d.  A video – What’s love? - 1.10.

Let’s watch a video.  Task for the 1st group is: What’s love?- answer the question according to the video and express your opinion using  nouns and adjectives, for  the 2nd group –– What’s  to  love?- answer the question and express your opinion using  verbs .

Teacher: Love is the deepest feeling which usually comes up to wedding and marriage. Do you think that marriages can be only as the result of big love?

IV. Production.

Reading Arranged marriage – is the marriage when parents of a young couple want them to get married. It is the choice of parents. Chaperone is a young girl who accompanies the bride during the dates.

1. Read the first  and  the last passages. Make a prediction. What can the story be about?

I was sixteen when I met my husband. I’d left school but I was having private tuition at home, to prepare me for some exams. My father arranged my marriage.

You know, my mother – she had to marry at thirteen but she is still happily married nearly fifty years later. Of course, nowadays thirteen is considered too young but you know … times change.

Suggested answers:

 – it can be about early marriage, this marriage may be organized by her father, may be she wants young people to marry at a young age.

2. The 1st group will read the beginning of the story, the 2nd group will read the ending of the story. In groups they will prepare questions to get more information from the part they didn’t read.

I was 16 when I met my husband. I’d left school but I was having private tuition at home, to prepare me for some exams. My father arranged my marriage.

He looked around for a suitable husband. He asked friends and relatives if they knew anyone, and found out about their education, their background and most importantly the family’s background. He managed to get a lot of information about them. It took not too long in my case. For my elder sister he saw over a hundred men. It can be difficult to decide but for me he saw only 2 - one in the morning, and one in the afternoon and  he chose the second  one. It happened in the following way:

Well,  the first man was very wealthy, and he was well-dressed and had good manners, but he hadn’t had a good education. Another man wasn’t terribly wealthy, but he was well-educated and he came from a good background, his family owned a village . He was 22 and was studying law. And my father chose him. I think he thought money wasn’t everything – for my father education was more important and anyway, if a man  is well-educated, he will earn in the end.

Actually, Shyam (it’s my husband’s name) didn’t want to get married at all but his father had  told him he must, so when he came to my house to meet my father, he was very badly-dressed because he hoped my father would refuse him. But luckily for me, my father did like him, and he had to say yes. He had promised his father. Then I met them both that day.  First my family spoke to them and then they called me in and we spoke for four or five minutes. Actually I wasn’t sure, so I left it to my father. I trust him a lot. Well, after a while, there was a special day. It was a kind of  an engagement party. But  Shyam and me used to be on the phone every day and we would  meet regularly but always we had to have a chaperone. And after ten months we got married. We’ve been married nearly for 25 years now. It’s been a successful marriage. My father made a good choice. We have two handsome sons. They are 22 and 17 now. We will arrange their marriages, too. I still believe that the system of arranged marriages is a good one. But it depends on a lot – especially on the family choosing the right person. But one main reason is that the couple enter the marriage not expecting too much . Actually,  there are many divorces between couples who thought they were marrying for love.

You know, my mother – she had to marry at 13  but she is still happily married nearly 50 years later. Of course, nowadays thirteen is considered too young but you know … times change.

Teacher: What were you shocked by or what were you surprised with while reading the story?

Suggested answers:

 – The thing that I was shocked by is the fact that this girl’s father made a choice of a husband for her, she hadn’t even  seen  him before.

 – What I was surprised with was the fact  that she had to have a chaperone  when she went to a date.
