Theme: “Travelling to the Earth”

Objectives:

1. Revision and practice of grammar tenses.

2. Developing pupils` speaking, reading and comparative skills and abilities.

3. Maximize pupils` potential and widen their outlook.

Equipment: Microsoft Power point presentation, the tape, activboard, handouts.

 Outline:

I. Warm-up. Teacher:  I want you to look at the pictures on the activboard and try to guess the theme of our lesson. (Prediction)

Pupils try to guess.

Teacher: The theme of our lesson is “Travelling to the Earth”.

II. Revision of Grammar tenses.  Teacher: Today we shall revise two past tenses –The Past Simple Tense and The Past Continuous Tense.

What does Past Simple Tense mean? – It means the actions which happened in the past.

How is it formed? – It is formed with the help of the second form of the main verb (V2(ed). Negative forms and questions are formed with the help of auxiliary verb – did.

What about key words? – Yesterday, last...,  ... ago, in... (1995).

They went to the Earth.

They didn`t go to the Earth.

Did they go to the Earth?

What does Past Continuous mean? – It means the actions which were happenning at the definite moment in the past.

How is it formed? – It is formed with the help of auxiliary verbs was/were and Ving (participle I)

What about key words? – At 5 o`clock yesterday, from 2 till 3 o`clock yesterday, the whole... (evening), while, When mother came home, at that moment.

They were flying to the Moon.

They weren`t flying to the Moon.

Were they flying to the Moon?

III. Writing exercises. Teacher: you have got handouts on your desks. The pupils of the first variant will write participles one into three columns according to their spelling.

 The pupils of the second variant will write the second forms of the verbs into two columns: regular and irregular.

Check up- pupils change their handouts and check their works.

IV. Circle the correct key word. Teacher: You know that all grammar tenses have different key words.  Your task is to go to the activboard and circle Past Simple key words in red and Past Continuous key words in green

Tomorrow,  at that moment,  always,  next week,  from 6 till 7 o`clock yesterday,  already,  while,  ever,  the whole evening yesterday,  just,  two hours ago,  in 1998,  next weekend,  in ten days,  yet,  soon,  last year,  in three weeks.

V. Making up the sentences. Teacher: look at the pictures of small aliens, make up the sentences what they were doing at the definite time in the past.

VI. Listening. Teacher: Now look at the picture of a small alien Spig and his mother. Listen to their dialogue and then answer the questions.                                         

VII. Speaking. Pupils read the questions and answer them.

What does Spig say he was doing all afternoon?

Was it true?

What do you think Spig was doing instead of working?

VIII.  Reading .  Teacher:  Some time ago some aliens came to our planet. They were very surprised to see many things there. Now you should read these three small texts and try to guess the meaning of the marked words.

 On Monday.  Today was my first day on planet Earth. It was a strange place.  I was walking along the river when a green and yellow earthworm appeared. It was travelling very fast and it was very noisy. It came to a feeding station where a lot of people were waiting. Then it stopped and ate all the people in the station.

 On Tuesday. In the evening I went for a walk around the town. A man was standing outside his little red house. I watched him while he was washing his house and singing. He washed the doors, the windows and the roof. I felt sorry for him because he was a big man and only had a small house.

 On Wednesday.  Today I went to the seaside. People were playing at the beach.  Some of them were eating different kinds of food. There were lots of small spaceships in the air. While one man was eating his sandwich, a spaceship flew down very fast and took his sandwich.

IX. Matching the pictures and the texts.

X. Follow-up. Pupils answer the questions about the text:

Was it a real house for that man?

What was the man doing?                                                                                  

What were the people doing at the beach?

Were the real spaceships in the air?

What were the people waiting for?

Did the train eat all the people in the station?

XI. Writing a message.  Teacher: Now you know what the aliens did and what they saw on our planet at the beginning of the week. Let`s find out what they saw on other days. You have got sheets of paper with some code. Your task is to write the coded message correctly and read it out.

On Thursday I  saw the Earth people. They were wearing strange clothes.

On Friday I saw the Earth people again. They were eating strange food.

On Saturday I  saw the Earth people. They were looking at the map.

Then they got in a spaceship and flew away.

XII. Singing a song. Teacher: You`ve worked hard at the lesson and I want you to have a little fun. Let`s sing a song together. Pupils listen to the tape and then sing a song filling in the correct words: moon, seen, been, comet, travelled, space station, shooting star.

XIII.   Grammar test (10 questions)

IV. Homework: to write a composition about the aliens` travelling to our planet.
