Theme: The modal verbs “Have to/ Should”

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to consolidate the usage of the modal verbs “have to/should”.
  2. To develop pupil’s reading, writing and speaking skills.
  3. Students will be able to increase their interest to English through pair and group work.

Teaching materials: Power Point presentation of the lesson, handouts, cards, tape.

  3. Presentation:
    1. Grammar revision.

    3. Speak about what is good/bad for teeth.
    4. Work in groups. Give advice.
    5. Sing a song. “S-M-I-L-E” CD disk (Wayahead4, track 18)
    6. Work in groups. Read a newspaper article. Give advice.
    7. Match problems to advice.
    8. Grammar revision.
    9. Fill in the blanks with “have  to/has to”.

    11. Choose the correct form of the verb.
    12. Watch the video. Match pictures with problems.

 Procedure

  1. Org. moment:

-          Good afternoon, children.

-          Take your places

-          Good afternoon, dear guests.

  1. Warm-up:

-          At the beginning of our lesson, you have to work with these cards.

-          And, your task is to divide them into two columns.

-          After that you have to explain why you chose these columns.

  1. Presentation:
    1. Grammar revision.

-          As today we work with modal verbs, let’s review them.

-          Click the bottom with the modal verb “should”

-          What do we use “should” for?

-          How do we use it in positive sentences?

-          How do we form negative sentences with should?

-          How do we form questions with should?

  1. A game.

-          Now let’s play a game.

-          Click the picture. In this exercise you have to read the sentence and then you have to choose the right picture.

-          The first five pupils get a “+”.

  1. What is good/ bad for teeth?

-          Let’s speak about what is good and what is bad for our teeth.

-          Can you tell me what is good for our teeth?

-          What is bad for our teeth?

-          Click the slide, and check were you right or not.

  1. Work in groups.

-          So, at this stage of the lesson, you have to work in groups.

-          I divide your class into groups of 3.

-          The pupils in the first row, you will be groups A

-          The pupils in the second row, you will be groups B

-          The task of the group A is to write what we should do.

-          Groups B, you have to write that we shouldn’t do.

-          Write as many sentences as you can.

  1. Sing a song.

-          The next slide.

-          Let’s have a rest and sing a song that is called “S-M-I-L-E”

-          Please smile when you are singing this song.

  1. Newspaper articles.

-          You have to work in groups of 3.

-          Your task is to read a newspaper article. Identify the problems.

-          And then give them some advice.

-          The 1st group:

-          What problem does Sue have?

-          What advice can you give?

-          The 2nd group:

-          What problem does Almaz have?

-          What can you tell him?

-          The 3rd group:

-          What problem does Jack have?

-          What advice can you give him?

-          The 4th group:

-          What problem does Alex have?

-          What should he do?

-          What shouldn’t he do?

-          The 5th group:

-          What problem does Sam have?

-          What should/shouldn’t he do?

  1. Match the problems with advice.

-          You have two columns of the sentences.

-          Here we have problems with advice.

-          Your task is to match the problems with the correct advice.

-          Work in your sheets of paper.

-          Don’t look at the screen.

-          Let’s check.

  1. Grammar revision.

-          We’ll continue to work with the next modal verb.
